The people of Ukraine deserve the right to defend themselves from imperialism. The people of Iran and Afghanistan deserve not to live under repressive theocracies. The people of all countries should have the right to self-determination & freedom.

Carl Sagan passed away #OTD in 1996. In his final interviews he left us with two messages that are even more relevant today: one emphasizing the importance of a science literate public, the other a warning about how hard it is to extract ourselves when we’ve been conned.

Iran, protests, revolution

We will be having a gathering of friends and family in our home Wednesday night to celebrate Yalda, and both my partner and I have mixed feelings about this.. our minds and hearts are in Iran right now. It feels wrong to "celebrate" this moment, but perhaps, somehow, being together can evolve into something bigger, into something like solidarity, with those risking their lives to live a decent life.

Iran, protests, revolution

The United Youth of Iran, the resistance group that has emerged as the leading coordinator of the current revolution in Iran, has called for three days of protests and strikes starting today (tonight for those in North America). Wednesday is winter solstice, which is celebrated as Yalda Night in Iran, a secular celebration of food and togetherness during the longest night of the year.

I wonder how much actual good could have been done in the world with 44 billion dollars.

I keep seeing that “first they came for the journalists” sign, and it pisses me off so much, because when they came for muslims, immigrants, and trans people, mainstream journalists normalized it and reported it as “both sides”. Somehow it didn’t count for them until it was happening to them personally, which is *exactly* what the fucking poem was warning against in the first place.

What a beautiful blueprint for dismantling a dictatorship, I hope everyone, everywhere, watches this, to understand the power behind collective action. youtube.com/watch?v=Fr4FTl9Pqq

The few parts of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail (waterfronttrail.org/the-trail/) near I've been on have been beautiful, so I'm excited to try to explore more of it next year.

I've long had hip issues - femoroacetabular impingements (hopkinsmedicine.org/health/con) on both sides, arthroscopic surgery in 2015 on the left - and had mild-to-medium osteoarthritis confirmed with an X-ray last week. I've managed it well so far, I think, but going to need to stop certain exercises (anything involving lots of running, basically). I enjoy biking so when the weather improves, thinking of taking up road .. any tips welcome as I start to learn more about it!

We are in the midst of another Google Reader-level community disruption.

It’s a good time to reset, take stock, clean house, and own your content!

If you don’t yet have your own web site—it’s a good time to start!

1. The most crucial piece is ownership of the domain name.
2. Then add content (it can just be plain HTML!)
3. Iterate on it! Make it better, but more importantly—make it yours.

Every news outlet should stand up a Mastondon instance for their reporters & staff.

It’ll be great to see GivennameFamilyname@mastodon.famousnewspaper.com or whatever domain they want to use.

Built in verification. Every reporter for the Washington Post on a washpo domain. Every reporter for the New York Times on an NYTimes domain. Etc, etc.

Plus the “local” feed for each instance becomes a feed of all the posts from that institution mixed together — providing extra discovery.

I feel more liberated on #Mastodon. When I like something on Twitter, all my followers see it. Not everybody shares my likings. I don't like everything I see here. Here I don't care and fave what I want. I feel less observed, less statistically analysed. Just a feeling, but I like it.
